USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) is the eighth Nimitz-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. Named after the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, the ship was commissioned on July 25, 1998.

Harry S. Truman was sworn in as Vice President under President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 20, 1945. Only 82 days later on April 12, 1945 he was sworn in as the nations’ 33rd President following the unexpected death of President Roosevelt. While serving as President of the United States, Truman was able to achieve some important changes. He issued executive orders desegregating the armed forces, forbidding racial discrimination in Federal employment. He also established a Committee on Civil Rights and encouraged the Justice Department to argue before the Supreme Court on behalf of plaintiffs fighting against segregation. During his first two months in office he also oversaw the ending of the war in Europe.
