As one of the original 13 colonies, the history of state of Massachusetts is as old as the United States itself.
Did you know that Alexander Graham Bell, the man who invented the telephone, first demonstrated its use in Boston in 1876? Did you know Massachusetts is home to America's first lighthouse, the country's first college? Even the first sewing machine was built in Boston in 1845!
Massachusetts also has an interesting history when it comes to the U.S. Navy - Decorated Navy veteran and 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. USS Constitution, the Navy's oldest commission ship, was first launched at Boston Harbor on Oct. 21, 1797. Over the years there have been at least 80 ships named after the state of Massachusetts, its cities, places and people!
