Lt. Cmdr. Everett Alvarez, Jr. speaks to the crowd during a welcome-home ceremony in February 1973 (photo on display at Hoa Lo Prison Relic in Hanoi, Vietnam). Alvarez was a prisoner of war (POW) for the entire duration of the Vietnam War—making him the longest-held POW in North Vietnam. He was released on Feb. 12, 1973 (courtesy of Shawn Vreeland).
