Lt. j.g. Everett Alvarez, Jr., in his striped prison uniform
Lt. j.g. Everett Alvarez, Jr., in his striped prison uniform, talks with a Vietnamese prison guard while in downtown Hanoi, North Vietnam, ca. 1967. Vietnamese prison guards routinely escorted American POWs around town to view nationalist- and Communist-themed museum exhibits and other landmarks. They were often paraded before crowds of angry Vietnamese townspeople and photographed for propaganda purposes (Office of the Secretary of Defense).
